Why speed matters more with ads
Someone who taps an ad is often on a phone, sometimes on a slow connection in a basement, a driveway or a parking lot. If the page shows a blank screen, they go back and tap the next ad. You pay for that click either way. Google also looks at the landing page experience when it rates your ads, so a slow page can cost you on both ends.
What usually slows a landing page down
| Cause | What we do about it |
|---|---|
| Huge photos straight from a camera | Resize each image for the screen it shows on and use modern formats |
| Page builders that load everything everywhere | Rebuild the page lean, or strip unused parts from the builder |
| Chat widgets, pop-ups and old tracking tags | Keep the tags you use, delay the rest until after the page shows |
| Web fonts in many weights | Load one or two weights, with a system font shown while they arrive |
| Video in the first screen | Swap it for a still image with a play button |
| Forms embedded from a third party | Use a native form, or load the embed only when someone reaches it |
How we test
We measure the page with Google's own tools before and after the work, and we load it on an ordinary phone over a throttled mobile connection, since that is closer to how your visitors see it. You get a short note with what we changed and what each change was for.
Speed without losing tracking
The quick way to speed up a page is to delete every script, and that breaks your conversion tracking. We go through each tag with you, keep the ones that report leads to your ad accounts, and load them in a way that doesn't hold up the first screen.
One page or a whole site
Ad traffic usually lands on a few pages, so we start there. If the same problems run through the rest of your site, the quote can cover that too, page by page.
Questions
Can you speed up a page without rebuilding it?
Often, yes. Image fixes, tag cleanup and font changes can make a big difference on their own. If the page builder itself is the problem, we'll say so and quote a rebuild.
Will my page look different afterwards?
Usually not much. Most speed work happens behind the scenes. Where a change is visible, such as swapping a video for a still, we ask first.
